As with other investments, there are generally fees and expenses associated with participation in a 529 plan. There is also a risk that these plans may lose money or not perform well enough to cover college costs as anticipated. Most states offer their own 529 programs, which may provide advantages and benefits exclusively for their residents. Investors should consider, before investing, whether the investor’s or the designated beneficiary’s home state offers any tax or other benefits that are only available for investment in such state’s 529 college savings plan. Such benefits include financial aid, scholarship funds, and protection from creditors. The tax implications can vary significantly from state to state.

Speaker: Jordan Jackson

Trade Wars, what does it mean to you?

Jordan Jackson, Market Analyst, an employee of J.P. Morgan since 2015, Jordan is responsible for publications such as the Guide to the Markets and Weekly Market Recap, as well as conducting research on the global economy and capital markets. Prior to his role on Global Market Insights, he worked on the Global Consultant Strategy Group based in New York where he was responsible for serving the investment needs of institutional asset management consultants in North America. He earned a B.A. in African-American Studies from the University of Virginia and holds Series 7 and 63 licenses. He is a CFA Level II candidate.

The US is enjoying a short surge in economic growth, firming inflation and a very tight labor market. Corporate earnings look strong thanks to tax reform. Despite all of this, the seeds of a slowdown are being sown: fiscal stimulus is set to fade in 2019, monetary policy is set to tighten, and global PMI’s are beginning to reflect the impact of trade tensions on the world economy. Trade may be one of the biggest risks to a global economic slowdown; I’ll discuss what tariffs have been put in place, what’s on the docket and our outlook on how things will progress ahead of and following the US midterm elections.
